Feminism = gender equality.

Advocating for Riverina Women

Welcome to Wagga Women's Health Centre Inc., an independent not-for-profit community-based organisation on Peter St in Wagga Wagga. We provide a safe, supportive, and non-judgmental environment for women over 16 years across our region. We are proud to be a feminist organisation committed to supporting women's rights and empowering women to own their health and wellbeing.

At Wagga Women's Health Centre, we believe every woman deserves access to high-quality, culturally sensitive, evidence-based healthcare regardless of her background or circumstances. We do this through our evolving approach to client services and advocacy work beyond our Centre.

Our client services support women in all aspects of their lives. This includes physical and reproductive health services, mental health and wellbeing support, health education and acute and ongoing crisis support for women needing immediate help.

We accommodate walk-ins and face-to-face appointments for those in Wagga and Surrounds, and additionally provide many services virtually or via phone to increase accessibility for all women in the Riverina.

Our team of compassionate professionals aims to provide the highest level of care and support to every woman who utilises our services. We are here to work in partnership with you.

Feminism and advocating for women in the Riverina, Wagga Women's Health Centre

Helping Wagga Women since the 1970s.

Herstory of the Wagga Women’s Health Centre

In the late 1970s, only a handful of Wagga Wagga’s General Practitioners were prepared to prescribe oral contraceptives freely.

Ald. Mary Kidson, the only woman on Wagga Wagga City Council, campaigned to fight for improved local family planning services.

Extensive lobbying culminated in a public meeting in July 1978, attended by 60 people. Further meetings were held and the encouraging turnouts, with generous pledges of money from the community, led to the opening of the Centre in rented premises at 131 Edward St.

Much work had to be done to transform what was a badly run-down house into a facility that was comfortable and operational for support services. Senator Susan Ryan officially opened the Centre in October 1979.

In February 1981, the Centre relocated to Morrow Street, operating without funding. Since 1985, NSW Health has funded the Centre through its Non-Government Organisation Grant Program. The Centre, which moved to 92 Morgan Street in June 2011, has a local management committee of interested community members. Those at the Centre now are proud of all the lobbying, energy, commitment and hard work done in the early years.

In October 2014, the Centre achieved a significant milestone by purchasing our own building at 22 Peter Street. This was achieved by three years of tireless strategic fundraising activities and profound support from the Wagga Wagga and the surrounding community.

History of Wagga Women's Health Centre

The visionary efforts by the centre’s founders and those who have followed have resulted in a much greater emphasis on those most basic tenets of a free and modern society… women’s health care and rights.
